From NewsScan DELL SALES SOAR AMID LAST YEAR’S PC SLUMP
Dell Computer was the only major PC vendor to boost unit sales and market share in 2001, according to statistics from IDC and Gartner’s Dataquest. Dell’s unit sales in the U.S. exceeded the combined total of Compaq and Hewlett-Packard, which are Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. In worldwide markets, Dell unit sales rose 18.3% over the previous year, boosting market share to 13.3%, said Dataquest. Dell’s rosy numbers are especially notable given the fact that total PC sales fell in 2001 for only the second year on record. “We are bumping along the bottom here,” says a Dataquest analyst.
