MSNBC: AOL in negotiations to buy Red Hat
My spin:I wonder, is this a smart move (if it’s true) or a dumb move)? Is AOL that desperate to grow and grow and grow that it want’s to push it’s own operating system? If anyone can do it AOL can – they’ve got the money and marketing might to do something like this. But will it be worth it? MS has 90% of the desktop OS market it’s NOT going to be easy and may be a VERY bloody and wasteful battle for AOL to try to even dent that 90%
To counter Microsoft’s desktop hegemony, New York-based AOL Time Warner could use the deal to couple its America Online software, the market leader with more than 33 million Internet subscribers, with Red Hat’s operating-system technology, sources said.
