NYT: Palm to Announce Completion of Spinoff of Software Unit
Palm hopes to better position itself to grow the Palm OS platform and to better compete against Windows Pocket PC. Palm wil continue to make Palm PDA’s but also will continue to (and I guess even more so) license the OS to competing Palm based operating system PDA manufacturers such as Hand Spring and others.
David C. Nagel, chief executive of the Palm software unit, which has not yet announced its new name, said the split from the hardware division would help ease the competitive fears of potential software customers. Some licensees have worried about showing products-in-progress to Palm representatives.
