Internet World and Streaming Media East 2002

I’ve covered Internet World professionally for about 4 years and the most glaring observation at this years Fall 2002 expo was the “smallness” of the show.
In years past, IW took up 2 floors (main floor and basement), and the press booth and meeting rooms were usually on the 2nd floor with space for the hundreds of press covering the event.
This year IW took up only a small portion of the Javits Center and few companies had large pavilions or islands of space as in past years.
Interestingly enough, one exhibitor, IBM had their booth collateral set up (banner, table, etc) but no handouts and no one there to staff the booth. (their obviously were logistical problems – but this ghost town booth represented a glaring example of the entire show)
Yahoo had the most interesting handouts – a sponge like airplane-projectile-rocket thing with a rubber band attached. Pull the rubber band and fire the airplane. Content management company RedDot handed out a rubber red ball, while AOL held onto their t-shirts unless you sat through an overview of AOL.
There were several main categories of products and services at IW this year.
– Payment processing / e-business services to enable web sites to accept payments for services and products.
– Content management solutions so that “anyone in your company” can manage and edit Intranet or Internet Web content
– Security services to protect one’s web site and/or network
– Internet presence / service providers and consultants
– Search Engine Optimization services
– Video streaming services and products
I enjoyed touring the perimeter of the IW exhibit hall as that’s where the smaller and more interesting companies are usually located.
I’ll be covering Internet World, PC EXPO, CEBIT (now coming to NY) and other events as long as they are around, however, its sad to see how small these shows are becoming (CEBIT to be seen) and the smaller and smaller audiences in attendance.
