For many years, the smart money has bet against AMD and the other Intel x86 competitors. Yet, somehow, some of these competitors have survived and-at times-even thrived. AMD is the oldest and most persistent Intel competitor, and has gone through times where many thought the company would not survive. Each time AMD has proved the pundits wrong. But 2004 could be the final make-or-break year for AMD. AMD’s Opteron has been positioned by some as an Itanium competitor.
