Hundreds of thousands of people tried to switch telephone providers yesterday, taking advantage of new federal rules allowing consumers to take their phone numbers with them.
Customers in the top 100 metropolitan markets lined up in stores and applied online to transfer their numbers between cell phone carriers, or from a home number to a wireless phone. (full story)
