Though firewalls are standard in the enterprise, the capabilities of firewall technology are expected to significantly evolve over the next few years. The latest research from Meta Group projects the firewall market to grow at a 25 percent annual growth rate until 2005, as companies continue to add the technology.
Firewalls serve as the interface between a corporate, or trusted, network and the Internet, often called “the public untrusted network.” Firewalls also are used within corporations between departments or in front of data centers. “Ninety eight percent of the companies we deal with have at least one firewall product, but maybe only a quarter of them use firewalls within the business,” Meta Group analyst Mark Bouchard told NewsFactor.
