I’ve been a member of the New York City Manhattan Chamber of Commerce for a few years now and have benefited greatly.
Many of the members of the Chamber are smaller businesses like mine, attending Chamber breakfasts, networking events, meetings and etc. Of course being able to offer Chamber members discounts and directly contact them via email, fax or phone is an added benefit.
However, interestingly enough, I’ve noticed that more and more, large, national companies are joining the Chamber. A few weeks ago, I got communications from Cisco, Gateway and ACCPAC inviting me to try out their various products and services.
Nancy Ploeger, President of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce explained that increasingly Chambers are an untapped direct market to local small businesses. Sure, radio, TV, online and print advertising all have their place, but Chamber advertising and “relationship building” can bear fruit.
In Microsoft’s case, a Chamber sponsor, they had a room full (200+) of business owners listen to and ask questions of Mr. Bill Gates. A few weeks later a senior Microsoft executive came to New York for another talk and ask session.
Sponsorship in the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce ranges from $5,000 to $25,000 and includes varying degrees of visibility but the rewards are powerful.
Nancy explained that using a vehicle like the Chamber can also give a sponsor an opening to other business organizations. Chamber presidents like Nancy have eyes and fingers connected to many political and organization resources and can harness a community of business owners that a company could not get together on their own.
