As Microsoft prepares to launch Microsoft Office 2007 you might be considering a better office suite but not want to pay hundreds of dollars for it. There’s several options – including the famous Corel Word Perfect.
Deciding what your business needs, really depends on what type of business you are in. Let’s say you’re a professional services firm and do not write a lot of original memos and documents. Maybe the bulk of your work is via email, RSS feeds, HTML and SMS to cell phones. In this kind of environment a word processor is NOT your top priority.
However, maybe you are a law firm or some other company that must produce a boat load of documents. Inter-office collaboration; client collaboration and other things are very important as you manage digital and paper documents. The word processing system you use is so vital and important.
Cnet’s put together an extensive a review of “Office alternatives” together and writes It’s no secret that Microsoft Office dominates the productivity suite market, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only way to go. Corel, Sun Microsystems, and Apple offer alternatives that provide a core stable of programs at a fraction of the price of Microsoft’s package. Corel WordPerfect Office X3 sports interface improvements and one-click PDF, HTML, and XML publishing. The lesser-known StarOffice 8 provides all the basic productivity tools and throws in a couple of extras, such as a drawing program. OpenOffice 2 is Sun’s free version of StarOffice. If you’re looking for only one app and not a whole suite, you can pick from a bunch of free Web-based tools such as the word processor Writely, now owned by Google. Of course, there are trade-offs. These alternative apps are not the best at converting Microsoft Office files.
