Ensuring your network is protected from viruses, hackers, spyware and other forms of un-authorized access is very important. There are dozens of types of solutions you can implement and in fact some I’m sure you and your local IT consultant are already implementing. These include ensuring your network is secured from outside and inside attack with a properly configured firewall, ensuring anti-virus software is installed on every computer and blocking spam from your email server.
As you look for ways to ensure your network is as protected as possible, one tool you might want to consider is by Positive Networks, and it has a security product called PhoneFactor.
Here’s how it works: You log into your network. The minute you key in your password, your phone rings (cell phone, land line, whatever you want.). If you don’t punch in the correct PIN into your phone, it freezes the account, your IT person is alerted, and fraud is stopped before it starts.
Most security we rely is “something you know”. You’re asked to key in a PIN number. But when you add “something you have” you increase the level of security. Adding a third level of security, “something you are” – such as a fingerprint or iris adds an even great level of security.
Sometimes security can get in the way or be too much. If all you have on a server is an Excel spreadsheet listing how many cookies you need for a picnic, it’s not worth the effort making it very secure. But if on your network you have your employee payroll information, customer records and more – you need to enhance your network security. If you are in a regulated industry and/or store personal and financial information on thousands of customers you security needs to be even tighter.
At last week’s Taste of Technology Small Business Series our panel of security experts (Special Agent Chris Stangl, FBI; Carl Mazzanti, eMezzanti Technologies Business Consulting Services; and Evan Stein, CMIT Solutions) shared with us best practices in keeping our business data secure.
