Karen Mills Nominated as Barack Obama’s SBA Head

As you know we mainly (99.9%) cover small business technology issues, but a new head of the Small Business Administration is important. As the new SBA head directs and oversees small business loans and so many other programs.
Karen Mills has been nominated by President Elect Obama as the head of the Small Business Administration
karenmills.jpgForbes writes Karen Mills of Brunswick, Maine, is no stranger to the concerns and demands of the business community. Mills has worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Co. and as a product manager for General Foods.. In 1999 she co-founded the New York-based venture capital firm Solera Capital, and she is currently the managing director of Scotts Miracle-Gro and a director of Arrow Electronics (nyse: ARW – news – people ), a Mellville, N.Y.-based distributor with a $2.1 billion market capitalization. She also serves as an adviser to Maine Gov. John Baldacci and as the chair of his Council on Competitiveness and the Economy.
Although there are so many variables related to the success or failure of any particular business, the governments agency overseeing small business growth and development, the SBA, plays an important role.
The SBA oversees, the Small Business Development Centers (wherein consultants help small businesses), Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) which provides free counseling from retired executives to small businesses and oversees small business loans. These programs and others are critical to many small businesses.

    Dear Karen,
I have my small contracting business with US govt. since last over 4.25 years. Selling chemicals is my specialty being having 37 years chemical industrial experties and experience.
Most of my business was being done with DSCR (DEF. SUP. SENTER RICHMOND)prior to 2008 year. Our total volume in the 1st year was nearly 1 million (2005), 1.5 million/2006 and 2007/2.5 million. In 2008 it shrink to nearly 1 million per year including Army, Navy and Air Force. The reason being is that under the privatization new clause they decided to hand over to few contractor such as SAIC and few other. Under this situation we being small business completely crushed or disabled.
Is there anything can be done so that we start getting all of bidding opportunities from DSCR? DSCR still invite bid but that is for $100/200 value bids which does not support our nusiness financially.
I may have few other thing to tell you, which I can express in my next letter if I have some positive response for this letter.

    Dear Karen:
I represent a seniors group who are trying to set up a Adult Day Care Center ( Social & Non Medical ) with a Walk in Clinic in Fremont Tri-city Alameda County for the Five Minority Asian Communities. We are try to raise working capital through our State Bank of India San Jose Branch. We have everything in place except a Bank Guarantee for $150000: It seems the SBA Loan Guaranty does not assist Non Profits. One wonders why ? Non Profits retains Profits for in house de3velopment. For Profits distribute profits. If you & President are talking of Affordable Health Care Why this lop sided policy. When President speaks of Bringing about Change, So Why not correct the vagaries in implementing SBA Loans .
The Major Funding Agencies are using the Bank Guaranties because of their status Why not at least the Seniors who like to take care of ourselves with dignity and independence. I hope to receive your feed back Again asking the banks to approve the SBA Loans is the another loop sided policy Why not create Small Business Development Corporation in every state to revamp the Economy .
