Security Vendor, RSA, Was Hacked. 19 Ways To Be More Secure. Security Is No Joke

The New York Times writes that RSA, a division of EMC was hacked. Companies are hacked all the time…in fact…don’t tell anyone sometimes banks are even successfully robbed. But what’s scary about this hack is that RSA is one of the leading security vendors in the market and provides HIGH END security to corporations.

If RSA can be hacked, is there any hope for the rest of us?

Well, there is.

  1. Be vigilant
  2. Backup your data
  3. Install anti-virus software on all computers and servers
  4. Install anti-malware/spyware (and more) software on all computers
  5. Require complex passwords
  6. Require password changes regularly
  7. Think twice before clicking
  8. Outsource the most sensitive of your data to a security vendor
  9. Have someone monitor your security logs and reports for any abnormal activity
  10. Be very careful of remote access to your network
  11. Treat wireless networks like the plague (well almost like the plague)
  12. Audit your networks
  13. Demand that every device connected to your network be authorized
  14. Segment your corporate network from your public/guest network
  15. Be practically nervous
  16. Use Biometric (as in fingerprint) security as much as possible
  17. Train users to not write down their passwords
  18. Never give our confidential information over the phone
  19. Know your employees and contractors
