We all want publicity. It’s great for business, validates us to customers and prospective customers and gets the word out about our business to lots of people. I’ll be the first to tell you that getting radio, TV, print interviews is great and in fact give presentations all about “Free Publicity For Growing Business Through Media Coverage“.
However, I’m also the first to tell you that in addition (or maybe instead) of being a media hound and spending time begging to get interviews – it’s time to be your own publisher.
Stop thinking of your “blog” as just a “blog” but instead, as many smart companies are doing (such as with the case of OPEN Forum) they are wrapping great content around the products and services they sell.
You should do this too.
You should write a regular, information rich column on your blog. Encourage your customers and staff to also contribute to the blog. Before you know it you’ll be getting more traffic and guess what? The “media” you have been chasing will start to call upon you for your expertise and advice.
Video is another great way to add content. You have to spend time speaking to someone (or talking to a video camera if you are taping yourself) but it’s easier to upload a video with a headline than it is to write 500 words.
I’ve been using Kodak’s Ki8 and like it as it has an external microphone jack – sound is so important.
Olympus recently announced the launch of a new video camera as well. Their press release reads:
“Transforming everyday videos into memorable movies can be a challenge, but the Olympus LS-20M Linear PCM recorder makes it easy to add creative flair to any recording with the introduction of high-definition video. Record a live recital, create home movies and upload amazing linear PCM audio and high-definition video with the new Olympus LS-20M. Incorporating technologies much like those that debuted in recent Olympus digital imaging products, the new LS-20M isthe first Olympus recorder that captures and edits 1080p HD video while recording 24 bit/96 hHz Linear PCM stereo sound. Combined with four different optional Magic Movie special effects features, the LS-20M enables users to create home movies that look and sound like professional productions in a device that’s so compact it fits in your pocket.”
The camera on your smartphone is great – I use mine quite often. But it’s also great to have a separate camera to record video on a dedicated device.
Take that blog you started and did nothing with and start producing great content – type it, video tape it – but start being your own publisher.
