I was just looking at a new company, Obihai and it’s product, Obi. It’s nice in that you don’t need your computer on for it to work – in fact it does not work through your computer. It connects directly to the Internet and uses Google Voice for the phone.
You pick up your regular home phone and through the Obihai’s Obi gadget call any other Obihai user and pay no toll charge for calls within the US or Canada. For international calls Obihai offers low rates.
You can wirelessly connect to Obi through your cell phone and dial out to another telephone number. Obihai also has a “soft phone” that you can use to dial from your computer.
If you’re looking to save money on phone calls there are many similar services for you to consider. For example, as part of a marketing project with Vonage, I’ve been trying out Vonage’s app for the iPad here
Check out this video about Obihai to better understand how Obi works.
