Need Easy Online Accounting for Your Small Business? Try this week’s App of the Week.

Xero TouchIf you’re looking for a simple, smart and elegant online accounting solution for your small business, Xero has made it’s offering more enticing with the release of its iPhone app, Xero Touch, this week’s App of the Week.

Xero creates what it calls “beautiful accounting software,” and it really does step away from drab spreadsheets and complex interfaces. If you’re a fan of Mint for your personal finances, you’ll like Xero.

With Xero Touch, the company has taken the essential features from its online software and created a mobile experience which allows you to easily check your small business’ financial status and perform accounting tasks on the fly.

Here’s what it offers:

Easy access. Xero Touch tosses out the usual username/password login. Simply punch in your 4-digit PIN—it’s true one-finger access.

Check your monies. With one quick glance, the app’s dashboard provides you with the balances of your bank accounts, credit cards and PayPal account. Everything’s in real time, so what you see is what you really have.

View and create invoices. The dashboard also indicates the invoices you have outstanding and overdue. Forgot to create an invoice back at the office? No worries since you can create, approve and send invoices right from your phone.

Record expenses. Xero Touch harnesses your mobile device’s camera for expense recording. You no longer have to hassle with crumpled paper receipts; take photos of your receipts and attach them directly to your expenses. Additionally, multi-currency functionality is supported for foreign exchange transactions.

Quick access to contacts. If you’re on the road and need to call a client or supplier, the app stores all your business contacts for easy retrieval. You can even pull up Google Maps to locate your contact’s office, so you won’t get lost finding your meeting.

Integrates with other apps. One of the strengths of Xero is its ability to easily integrate with other online business applications such as Freshbooks, 37 Signals’ Highrise, Salesforce, PayPal, Shopify, Zen Cart and Magento.

For you techies, Xero built this app using Sencha Touch, an HTML5 mobile app framework, then packaged Xero Touch as a native iPhone app using open source platform PhoneGap.

The app runs on both iPhones and iPads, and can be downloaded for free here.

Xero plans on launching a native Android app in the next few months. In the meantime, Xero customers can access the mobile version of its software on mobile devices via m.xero.com (though, this version doesn’t feature PIN access and photo-capturing for receipts).
