AOL: Businesses Should Run From It
AOL is a great tool for consumers, especially those who need hand holding. But the phone call I had yesterday with a NY small business owner (member of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce) prompts me once again to remind you to NOT use AOL for businesses use.
A hacker got a hold of this person's account and after several warnings and probation AOL shut down this businesses account and deleted all their email and everything else. In fairness to AOL they cannot tolerate hackers sending messages from AOL customer accounts. HOWEVER, AOL should block the account but not DELETE everything. Blocking the account will stop mail being sent out from the account but enable the customer to get to their email. Lesson's learned?
1. Get email from a traditional ISP like Earthlink.
2. Back up your email
3. Be vigilant about access to your account
