Cyber-attacks Second

The UK’s largest telecommunications provider has reported facing approximately 2,000 potential cyber-attacks every second. This alarming statistic indicates the intense scrutiny that devices connected to its network undergo by malicious sources. Press releases highlighted that devices are scanned around 1,000 times a day, translating to a scan roughly every 90 seconds.

Notably, over 75% of these scans are not harmless and represent hackers seeking vulnerabilities in the online systems of businesses and essential services. The sectors most frequently targeted include IT, defense, and financial services. However, non-traditional sectors such as hospitality and retail are also becoming increasingly susceptible to cyber threats.

One tactic commonly used by hackers involves employing disposable bots.

Facing relentless cyber threats

Interestingly, there was a significant rise, precisely a 1,234% increase, in new internet protocol (IP) addresses used by these bots within a year.

This observation is consistent with other research indicating that UK business technology should see a 31% increase in 2024. However, many companies are lagging in enhancing their cybersecurity measures accordingly. The press release warned that organizations are adding more connected devices without comprehensive cybersecurity plans, leaving them exposed to potential attacks.

Adding to the concern, the EU’s top cybersecurity official reported that cyber-attacks linked to Russian-based groups had doubled from the end of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024. Juhan Lepassaar, head of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), stated, “This is part of the Russian war of aggression, which they fight physically in Ukraine, but digitally also across Europe.”

Cybersecurity remains a critical issue as companies and organizations continue to upgrade their systems. The growing incidence of cyber-attacks underscores the need for robust cybersecurity frameworks to protect sensitive data and maintain secure online operations.
